Objectives of the course:
Teaching of the necessary knowledge and methodology concerning: bacteriology (including bacteria that cause zoonoses), parasitology, mycology, tropical and geographical medicine and virology. Preparation of the students for diagnosis, therapy, prophylaxis, surveillance and control of infectious diseases caused by the above mentioned etiological agents. Clinical cases are presented, together with clinicians, for a better understanding of the pathogens and the disease they cause emphasizing on issues of laboratory diagnosis.

Course contents:
Bacterial pathogens and bacterial infections
• Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Haemophilus, Neisseria, Corynebacterim, Bordetella, Anaerobes, Mycobacteria, Spirochaetales, Chlamydiae, Mycoplasma
• Zoonotic bacteria and zoonoses (Brucella, Rickettsiae, Coxiella, Bartonella, Anaplasmataceae, Leptosira, Pasteurella, Francisella)
Protozoal infections: Leismaniases, Malaria, Toxoplasmosis, Intestinal and vaginal protozoa
Helminthiases: Tissue and blood Helminths
Mycotic Diseases: Cutaneous, Systemic, Opportunistic pathogenic fungi.
Viruses, Laboratory diagnosis of viral infections, Hepatitis viruses, Herpes viruses, Respiratory viruses, Enteroviruses, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, congenital viral infections, HIV, Papilloma viruses, vaccines.
Insects of medical importance and Arthropod-borne infections.
Laboratory diagnosis of: infections of the Gastrointestinal, Respiratory, Central Nervous Systems; and sexually transmitted infections.
